SMEDA, business leaders push for greater MSME support to drive growth and exports

Government officials and business leaders have called for stronger policy support for Pakistan's micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), saying improved access to finance, a more business-friendly environment and closer public private cooperation are critical to unlocking the sector's contribution to economic growth, exports and employment.

The calls were made during a stakeholder engagement session organised by the Small and Medium Enterprises Development Authority (SMEDA) in collaboration with the Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) to mark World MSME Day 2026.

Speaking at the event, LCCI President Faheem Ur Rehman Saigol said entrepreneurship and enterprise development remain central to strengthening Pakistan's economy, describing MSMEs as key drivers of job creation, innovation and inclusive economic growth.

SMEDA Regional Chief Central Muhammad Javed Afzal presented the authority's Three Year Business Plan 2025–2028 and outlined a range of ongoing initiatives to support MSMEs across the country. These include business development services, entrepreneurship support, policy advocacy, facilitation of access to finance, cluster development, export development and capacity building programmes.

SMEDA Board Member Usman Khan said micro, small and medium enterprises form the backbone of Pakistan's economy and stressed that sustained growth in the sector will require stronger coordination between the public and private sectors.

Sheikh Sajjad Afzal, Convener of the LCCI SME Committee, called for further improvements in the ease of doing business and the creation of a more enabling regulatory environment to allow MSMEs to expand their contribution to the national economy and exports.

Opening the session, SMEDA General Manager Central Support Saleha Saeed highlighted the significance of World MSME Day and briefed participants on the organisation's mandate and services.

SMEDA Board Member Aasia Sail highlighted the role of micro enterprises in Pakistan's economy, while Falahat Imran, President of the Women Chamber of Commerce and Industry Lahore, commended SMEDA and the federal government for their continued efforts to support the SME sector, particularly women-led businesses.

The event brought together entrepreneurs, representatives of chambers and trade associations, financial institutions, academia, women entrepreneurs, young entrepreneurs and other stakeholders to discuss the role of MSMEs in fostering innovation, employment generation and sustainable economic development.
