OpenAI partners with Broadcom to develop custom AI processors

Move aims to enhance AI infrastructure amid global demand for generative AI services

SAN FRANCISCO — OpenAI announced on Monday a partnership with chipmaker Broadcom to design and build specialized computer processors for artificial intelligence applications.

The collaboration is part of OpenAI’s broader strategy to strengthen its position in the generative AI market, which began with the launch of ChatGPT in November 2022.

In recent weeks, under CEO Sam Altman, OpenAI has also secured investments and partnerships with Nvidia, AMD, Samsung, and SK Hynix to expand its AI data center and chip infrastructure.

The custom processors developed with Broadcom will be deployed in OpenAI-operated data centers and partner facilities to meet rising global demand for AI services, which now reach over 800 million weekly users.

Altman stated that the partnership is “a critical step in building the infrastructure needed to unlock AI’s potential and deliver real benefits for people and businesses.” Broadcom described the deal as “a pivotal moment” in AI development.

Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Analysts note that despite rapid growth, OpenAI’s AI business has yet to demonstrate profitability, raising concerns about potential financial risks amid the AI expansion.
