Pakistan Infrastructure Development Company Limited has wrapped up eight government-funded infrastructure projects worth a combined Rs36.669 billion over the past five years, as the federal housing ministry pushes ahead with a new round of urban development schemes.
According to documents shared with Wealth Pakistan, the completed initiatives span major road works, water supply upgrades and transport infrastructure undertaken nationwide since 2020 under the Ministry of Housing and Works.
The portfolio includes the Sher Shah Suri Road flyovers, the 6.4-kilometre Nishtar Road project, the 8.9-kilometre Manghopir Road (Phase-I), KMC fire tenders, KMC development schemes, the installation of 66-inch and 48-inch water pipelines, the 0.5-kilometre PNS Mehran Road, and Karachi’s Green Line Bus Rapid Transit System (Infrastructure Phase-I).
Project-wise cost details show the Sher Shah Suri flyovers, completed in 2020, at Rs2.39 billion; Nishtar Road and Manghopir Road (Phase-I), completed in 2019 and 2021, at Rs1.9 billion; and Manghopir Road (Jam Chakro to Banaras, North Bound), finalised in 2024, at Rs3.19 billion.
The KMC fire tenders scheme, completed in 2021, amounted to Rs1.88 billion, while KMC development schemes were delivered the same year at Rs1.011 billion. The laying of 66-inch and 48-inch pipelines was finished in 2020 at a cost of Rs1.65 billion, the PNS Mehran Road upgrade in 2021 at Rs0.04 billion, and the Green Line BRTS (Infrastructure Phase-I) in 2022 at Rs24.60 billion.
Alongside the completed works, the PIDCL has several active projects. These include the Karachi Urban Infrastructure Development Package, the Hyderabad Urban Infrastructure Development Package (revamping and rehabilitation) and federal courts in Karachi, with a combined estimated cost of Rs24 billion. The Karachi package is valued at Rs15 billion, the Hyderabad initiative at Rs5 billion, and the federal courts project at Rs4 billion.
Additional assignments under execution include the 1.8-kilometre Green Line BRTS extension, costing Rs4.59 billion, and a Rs0.058 billion scheme to integrate the 1-kilometre Orange Line with the Green Line.
A housing ministry official told Wealth Pakistan that the completed and ongoing schemes are intended to improve mobility, upgrade civic infrastructure and address longstanding development gaps in major urban centres. He said road rehabilitation and water pipeline projects in Karachi were launched to ease chronic congestion and help resolve persistent water shortages.
According to the official, the PIDCL has been instructed to speed up remaining works, particularly in Karachi and Hyderabad, due to their economic significance. The government is also weighing an expansion of the Karachi package to include additional roadworks, drainage improvements and new water supply channels.
