Eliminating interest a constitutional obligation: Siraj

Amir Jamaat e Islami (JI) Siraj ul Haq said that the interest system is a system of exploitation and its elimination is a constitutional obligation.

“Usury is a system of exploitation. Eliminating it is a constitutional obligation. Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has a major role in introducing this system to Pakistan, he said, while talking to media personnel after the hearing of a petition in Islamabad High Court (IHC) seeking elimination of usury from Pakistan on Monday.

He said the court has ordered the government to end this system of exploitation but the government is looking non-serious in bringing an end to this system. That is because the first step was taken by Nawaz Sharif in bringing this system to Pakistan.

Siraj said that the interest system is the system of Jews and the Holy Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) had also declared it haram (forbidden).  A society cannot progress in a usury based system and in Pakistan; the social system is growing weaker due to an abundance of interest.

The government should take practical measures for the elimination of usury so that this widespread menace could be curbed. He further said that JI had filed a petition regarding the elimination of interest system in Pakistan and the K-P government has also started raising its voice against the system.
