PEW suggests govt to go after CPEC opposers

The Pakistan Economy Watch (PEW) on Sunday suggested the government not to allow anyone to slow the pace of development of the economic corridor.

In a press release, PEW President Dr Murtaza Mughal asked for an action against the elements trying to damage economic corridor for political gains amid uncertainty. “The economic corridor is a game changer project which must be completed according to the schedule frustrating local and foreign players that are against it,” said Dr Murtaza Mughal.

He said that any issue hindering the development of this project would be a great loss therefore, all the steps should be taken to ensure timely completion of the CPEC. Dr Murtaza said that many powerhouses were being completed under CPEC for which government has not taken any loans while NEPRA has not given them any special concession for tariff etc.

He said that the notion that majority of jobs would go to Chinese nationals has proved wrong as thirty thousand Pakistanis are employed in the project against nine thousand Chinese, he informed. With the passage of time the number of jobs will surpass half a million which will reduce unemployment in the country, he added.

He said that majority of the reservations of the business community proved otherwise as the majority of the Chinese companies were not importing raw material from their own country but buying it from Pakistan which includes cement, iron and steel.
