Weekly inflation increases 0.74pc  

ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI)-based weekly inflation for the week ended on January 2 increased by 0.74pc as compared to the previous week.

The SPI for the week under review in the combined consumption group was recorded at 131.84 points as against 130.87 points registered in the previous week, according to latest data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The weekly SPI was collected with base 2015-16 covering 17 urban centres and 51 essential items for all expenditure groups.

The SPI for the lowest consumption group, up to Rs17,732, also witnessed 0.90pc increase, from 134.01 points in the last week to 135.21 points during the week under review, it added.

As compared to the corresponding week of last year, the SPI for the combined consumption group in the week under review witnessed an increase of 19.84pc, while for the lowest group, it increased by 18.99pc.

Meanwhile, the SPI for the consumption groups from Rs17,733 to Rs22,888, from Rs22,889 to Rs29,517, Rs29,518 to Rs44,175 and above Rs44,175 per month also increased by 0. 78pc, 0.77pc, 0.78pc and 0.76pc, respectively.

During the week under review, average prices of four items registered a decrease, while that of 28 items prices increased with the prices of 19 items remaining unchanged.

The prices of the commodities that recorded a decrease in their prices during the week under review included onion, potatoes, chicken (farm) and electricity charges.

The items which recorded an increase in their average prices included tomatoes, LPG, pulses (moong, gram, masoor, mash), mustard oil, gur, sugar, petrol, hi-speed diesel, vegetable ghee, eggs (farm), washing soap, bananas, cooked daal, firewood, powder milk, long cloth, cooking oil, shirting, georgette, milk fresh, garlic and mutton.

The commodities that observed no change in their price during the week under review included rice (basmati, irri-6), bread plain, beef with bone, curd, salt powder, chilly powder, tea, tea (prepared), cigarettes, lawn (printed), gents sandal, gents chappal, ladies sandal, energy saver, matchbox, telephone call and toilet soap.
