NA committee directs govt to revive PIA

PESHAWAR: The National Assembly (NA) Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat while strongly opposing the plan of outsourcing Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has recommended the government to take stringent measures for the revival of the national flag carrier.

The meeting of the Standing Committee on Cabinet Secretariat was held in Peshawar under the Chairmanship of Member National Assembly Rana Muhammad Hayat Khan.

The committee appreciated the efforts of the sitting management of PIA which has succeeded in reducing the accommodating losses of PIA from Rs32 billion to Rs26 billion during the recent years and has brought it down to Rs18 billion during the current year.

The NA body pointed out that if such efforts would be carried on, the national airline would be able to regain its status very soon.

The committee expressed grave concerns over the open sky policy and landing rights granted to foreign flights which harm PIA. The committee directed PIA and Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) to provide complete details within seven days of the meeting.

The meeting was attended by MNAs; Sardar Irfan Dogar, Rana Muhammad Qasim Noon, Parveen Masood Bhatti, Nighat Parveen, Shahnaz Saleem, Seema Mohiuddin Jameeli, Rasheed Ahmed Khan, Asad Umar, Nafeesa Inayatullah Khan Khattak, Moulvi Agha Muhammad, Special Secretary, Cabinet, CAA secretary and representatives of the concerned departments.
