Pakistan is looking to expand trade and cooperation with Syria, particularly in agriculture and technology, to benefit both nations, Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, said on Wednesday.
During a meeting with Syria’s Ambassador to Pakistan, Dr. Ramez Alraee, Hussain emphasized the longstanding ties between the two countries, underlining their shared historical, cultural, and religious connections as a foundation for enhanced collaboration.
The two officials discussed ways to strengthen bilateral ties, particularly in agricultural cooperation, trade, and cultural exchanges. Hussain highlighted that an existing Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on agricultural cooperation between Pakistan and Syria has already paved the way for collaboration in agricultural research, technology transfer, and food security.
Looking ahead, Hussain noted that once international sanctions on Syria are lifted, the country would become a valuable trade partner for Pakistan, especially in agricultural commodities such as cereals, fruits, and value-added products.
To facilitate this cooperation, both countries agreed to form a Joint Working Group (JWG) to explore practical collaboration in areas like modern farming practices, water resource management, capacity building, and trade facilitation. Hussain emphasized that Pakistan is ready to share its agricultural expertise with Syria, particularly in food security strategies.
Ambassador Alraee welcomed the proposal for the JWG and praised Pakistan’s continued support. He assured Syria’s commitment to working closely with Pakistan on mutually beneficial projects.
In closing, Minister Hussain reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to strengthening its partnership with Syria, ensuring that the bond between the two nations continues to grow across various sectors.
