Fertilizer consumption rises 53% in August 2025, driven by urea and DAP demand

Strong Kharif offtake and steady production support agriculture amid regional disparities

Fertilizer consumption in Pakistan recorded strong growth in August 2025, with total nutrient offtake rising 53.4% year-on-year, according to the National Fertilizer Development Centre’s (NFDC) Monthly Fertilizer Review. Cumulative Kharif season (April–August) figures show a 15.9% increase, reflecting steady agricultural demand amid fluctuating market conditions.

In August, urea offtake reached 2.676 million tonnes, up 12.4% from last year, while DAP consumption increased by 8.7% to 552,000 tonnes. Nutrient-wise, nitrogen usage rose 50.7%, phosphate 69.3%, and potash 49.3%. Regionally, Punjab and Sindh recorded the largest gains in urea consumption at 49.8% and 51%, respectively, while Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) saw a modest increase of 1%. DAP offtake rose sharply in Sindh (119%) and Balochistan (96%), but declined 7.6% in KP.

Domestic fertilizer production in August totaled 835,000 tonnes, with urea accounting for 597,000 tonnes, followed by NP at 80,000 tonnes and CAN at 71,000 tonnes. Imports remained limited, led by DAP at 50,000 tonnes. NFDC forecasts a comfortable buffer for the remainder of Kharif 2025, with urea availability at 4.27 million tonnes against projected demand of 3.17 million tonnes, and DAP at 1.017 million tonnes versus 703,000 tonnes demand.

Fertilizer prices showed mixed trends in August. Urea (Sona) declined 0.6% to Rs 4,400 per 50 kg bag, while other urea brands dropped 1.2%. DAP prices rose 3.7% to Rs 13,508 per bag. NP and SSP prices increased by 4.1% and 2.1%, respectively, while international urea and DAP prices fell in markets such as China and the Middle East.

With steady production and sufficient buffer stocks, the domestic fertilizer supply chain is expected to remain stable through the remainder of the Kharif season, though regional disparities in offtake and fluctuating DAP demand may require close monitoring.
