Tax exemption for cell phone users: Senate Body

ISLAMABAD: The Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology has recommended tax exemption for users with Rs 500 and less account balances.

Senator Shahi Syed chaired the meeting on Monday and directed the Federal Board of Revenue to submit details of revenue generated through taxes imposed on cellular services.

It was informed that there were almost 135 million registered cell phone users in the country.

The committee also discussed the issue of payment of pensions to retired employees of Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited.

The Pakistan Telecommunication Employees Trust managing director told the committee that a court had sought details of retired employees and their outstanding dues from the PTCL.

He said the court had ordered the company to pay the pensions, and the pensioners were receiving them as well. However, he added that the pensions had not been increased by 20 per cent as decided previously.
