Federal govt approves wheat policy 2025–26, fixes support price at Rs3,500 per 40kg

6.2 million tons to be procured for national reserves; restrictions on inter-provincial movement of wheat lifted

The federal government has approved the Wheat Policy 2025–26, setting the wheat procurement price at Rs3,500 per 40 kilograms to ensure fair compensation for farmers, maintain national food security, and strengthen strategic reserves.

The decision was taken during a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and attended by Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti, Gilgit-Baltistan Chief Minister Gulbar Khan, and other provincial representatives.

According to an official statement issued on Sunday, federal and provincial governments will jointly procure around 6.2 million tons of wheat from the upcoming harvest. The procurement will be made at the fixed price to stabilise market conditions and safeguard farmer income.

The policy also removes restrictions on inter-provincial wheat movement to ensure nationwide supply. A National Wheat Oversight Committee—chaired by the Federal Minister for National Food Security and including representatives from all provinces—will monitor policy implementation and report weekly to the prime minister.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said wheat remains the country’s staple food and a key source of livelihood for millions of farmers. He emphasised that the government is committed to protecting farmer interests and strengthening the agriculture sector.

He said the wheat policy was developed through consultations with provincial governments, farmer groups, and industry representatives. The prime minister said the new framework would promote agricultural growth, enhance farmer income, and reinforce food security across Pakistan.
