Telecom operators license fees to be reviewed: PTA

Islamabad: Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has planned to undertake a survey and study for scrutinizing the renewal period of telecom operator’s licenses and the utilization of the allotted spectrums by these companies.

Under the purview of this assessment, the licensing fee of telecom operators will also undergo review and revised which includes linking and delinking of renewal fee in relation to the winning price of earlier spectrum auction.

In the future Mobilink, Telenor and Zong would be requiring to renew their licenses once they are expired. The telecom regulator will be engaging a consultancy service to carry out this assessment and formulate a framework for Mobile Cellular License Renewal in this given regard. It will also work on inspecting the current licensing framework applicable in Pakistan and take international practice into consideration for comparative purposes.

Telecom operators renewed fees will also come under assessment, with its linkage to overall contribution in the economic growth of the country against comparable foreign investment. Previously, only Ufone and Mobilink have renewed their cellular licenses after their expiry which had cost $291m.
