ISLAMABAD: The government has appointed Murtaza Syed, an International Monetary Fund (IMF) employee, as deputy governor of the State Bank of Pakistan.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance, “In pursuance of section 10(4) of the State Bank of Pakistan Act, 1956, the federal government is pleased to appoint Murtaza Syed as deputy governor SBP for a period of three years with immediate effect.”
As per the detail, Murtaza Syed was currently working as the deputy division chief in the IMF’s strategy, policy and review department. He joined the fund in 2004 and previously worked in the fiscal affairs and Asia and Pacific departments. Prior to his current assignment, he was the IMF’s deputy resident representative in China. He has been involved in IMF programmes and surveillance of various emerging markets and advanced economies.
His analytical skills have covered macro financial linkages, fiscal and monetary policy, financial crisis, investment, demography and inequality. He has a PHD in economics from the University of Oxford.
Earlier, the incumbent regime had appointed Dr Reza Baqir as SBP governor for a period of three years. He also worked for IMF before joining the SBP.
