Hostage situation: FBR team held by wedding hall staff

After several hours, negotiations led to the release of all FBR officials

Karachi – A Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) team from RTO-II, Zone V, faced an unexpected confrontation at a marriage hall on Dalmia Road, where hall staff reportedly took them hostage during an inspection.

Assistant Commissioner Muhammad Hamza explained that the wedding hall was under scrutiny for allegedly under-reporting its income, prompting the FBR to investigate. As the FBR team began their inspection, they were met with strong resistance from the hall’s employees, who detained them.

Upon learning of the situation, Hamza arrived on-site to negotiate, while local police were also alerted. Despite police presence, the hall staff reportedly showed little compliance. After several hours, negotiations led to the release of all FBR officials.

Sources noted, “The FBR’s assertive revenue collection tactics have increasingly led to such confrontations. Revenue collection is crucial, but the methods must be fair and considerate toward taxpayers.”
