Pakistan seeks $2bn in Chinese financing ahead of key CPEC talks

KKH Phase II, ML-1 railway, and East Bay Expressway top the agenda as Islamabad prepares for JCC meeting

Pakistan has finalised the agenda for the upcoming Joint Coordination Committee (JCC) meeting with China, where it will seek over $2 billion in financing for major infrastructure schemes under the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), official sources confirmed on Saturday.

According to the agenda, top priority has been given to the realignment of the Karakoram Highway (KKH) Phase II, the Main Line-1 (ML-1) railway track, and the East Bay Expressway. Pakistan has requested $1.5 billion in financing for the KKH Phase II and East Bay Expressway combined, while another $500 million is being sought for the Rohri–Multan section of the ML-1 project.

The KKH Phase II realignment alone is estimated at around Rs500 billion, while the 14-kilometre East Bay Expressway will require more than Rs30 billion. Sources added that China is expected to shoulder 85 per cent of the cost of both these projects.
