FBR has not provided any exemption to NRTC, committee told

ISLAMABAD: The Managing Director of National Radio Telecommunication Company (NRTC) briefed the Standing Committee on Defence Production regarding its products especially Information & Technology sector.

The committee met Thursday under the chairmanship of MNA Khawaja Sohail Mansoor at 2:00 pm in the Parliament House, Islamabad. He informed that NRTC would be the first manufacturer of laptop and tablets in Pakistan. He said that under the Sales Tax Act 1990, FBR has not provided any exemption to NRTC, likewise, there was no exemption to the Income Tax of NRTC in Income Tax Ordinance, 2001.

He added that there was no exemption on the import of equipment and material, etc. He also stated that NRTC carries a sensitive nature of business concerning national security and the fact that its primary objective is to provide goods and services to the armed forces of Pakistan and law enforcement agencies.

He apprised the Committee that in the interest of national security NRTC should be provided relief/exemption for the strengthening of its manufacturing of various products within Pakistan.

The representatives from Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) were also present in the meeting. The committee unanimously recommended that NRTC representatives and FBR officers will further coordinate to resolve the issue. It was also decided that FBR will respond to the Committee within 30 days in this regard.

The committee deferred agenda item No.II related to DEPO on the request of the Ministry of Defence Production.

The meeting was attended by Muhammad Khan Daha, Chaudhary Hamid Hameed, Iffat Liaqat, Asyia Nasir, MNAs and besides the senior officers of the MoDP, NRTC & TDAP.
