Ex-Customs officer Asif Jah appointed as new FTO

ISLAMABAD: The federal government has appointed Pakistan Customs officer, Asif Mahmood Jah, as the new Federal Tax Ombudsman (FTO) for a period of four years.

As per details, Jah took oath from the President Arif Alvi on Wednesday.

He was serving as chief collector Customs North Region before retiring from government service last week. The position of FTO fell vacant after the expiration of Mushtaq Ahmad Sukhera's tenure in the second week of September.

Earlier, the FBR had issued a notification that Jah would retire next year, in May 2022. However, it recently issued a second notification granting him premature retirement.

Media reports state that this is the first time that the government has appointed an FTO from Pakistan Customs.

The FTO resolves complaints of the existing and prospective taxpayers and provides relief to the public by carrying out independent investigations about maladministration by functionaries administering the tax laws. He also strives to put things right, share lessons learnt and help improve public tax services and systems.
