U.S. President Donald Trump signed an executive order to position the United States as a global leader in artificial intelligence (AI), according to a White House aide.
The order sets a 180-day deadline for an Artificial Intelligence Action Plan aimed at sustaining and enhancing America’s AI dominance to promote economic competitiveness, national security, and human welfare.
As part of the directive, Trump instructed his AI adviser and national security assistant to remove policies and regulations implemented under former President Joe Biden. This includes revoking a 2023 executive order signed by Biden that required AI developers to share safety test results with the government for systems posing risks to national security, public health, or the economy.
Biden’s order had aligned AI oversight with the Defense Production Act to address risks before the public release of advanced AI systems. Trump’s new directive seeks to streamline AI policy and remove restrictions, emphasizing innovation and competitiveness in the sector. The move signals a shift in U.S. policy as it aims to lead in the global AI race.
