LAHORE: The Punjab government is executing 327 development schemes in Lahore under the Lahore Development Programme, with an investment of Rs59 billion aimed at comprehensive rehabilitation of the city’s roads, streets, sewerage, and drainage networks.
Chairing a review meeting on Friday, Punjab Finance Minister Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman said third-party monitoring and quality control have been entrusted to NESPAK to ensure transparency and high construction standards. The meeting was attended by Special Assistant to the Chief Minister Rashid Iqbal Nasir, members of the provincial assembly from Lahore, and senior government officials.
The Minister described the initiative as a flagship effort to uplift underserved areas of the provincial capital that had long been deprived of basic civic amenities. “This programme is not just about infrastructure—it reflects the chief minister’s vision for equitable development and improved living standards for all citizens,” he said, adding that Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif is personally supervising its swift execution.
Highlighting its broader impact, Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman noted that robust road infrastructure is vital for driving economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for Lahore’s residents.
Deputy Commissioner Lahore Syed Musa Raza provided a progress update, stating that 182 schemes are being implemented in the first phase across six zones, covering roadworks, street paving, sewerage improvement, and drainage enhancement.
During an interactive session, provincial lawmakers raised concerns regarding the livelihoods of street vendors during anti-encroachment operations and suggested a phased approach to sewerage projects to minimize disruption. The minister directed the deputy commissioner to accommodate the suggestions of the elected representatives and ensure the timely completion of all schemes.
He reiterated the government’s commitment to inclusive, sustainable urban development and urged swift resolution of any challenges in project execution.
