FBR requests Power Division to set up 40MW grid station at Chaman border for uninterrupted power supply

Proposal aims to protect ICT and security infrastructure and ensure smooth operationalisation of border land port under Integrated Transit Trade Management System

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) has requested the Power Division to establish a 40MW grid station at the Chaman Border Crossing Point (BCP) to maintain a stable and uninterrupted power supply, safeguard critical project equipment, and support the timely operationalisation of the strategically important border land port, according to a media report.

In a letter to the Power Division, FBR Chairman/Secretary Rashid Mahmood Langrial noted that the Government of Pakistan is implementing the Integrated Transit Trade Management System (ITTMS) under the ADB-funded CAREC Regional Improving Border Services (RIBS) initiative at the Torkham and Chaman BCPs. The FBR serves as the lead executing agency for the project.

The initiative aims to develop modern border land ports with advanced ICT and security systems to reduce cross-border processing times for cargo and passenger traffic. Construction contracts for both BCPs were awarded to the National Logistics Corporation (NLC) under FIDIC Plant & Design-Build terms.

To ensure stable operations, dedicated 5MW/11KV feeders and associated infrastructure were provided by QESCO and TESCO, including installation of new transformers. Payments were made for the execution of these provisions.

However, the FBR reported that frequent and severe voltage fluctuations have occurred since the start of the power supply, posing a risk to sensitive ICT and security equipment at both BCPs.

The board emphasised that a dedicated 40MW grid station is essential to mitigate these risks and ensure uninterrupted project operations.
