Government forms inquiry committee over contradictory statements on Cnergyico’s dues

Two-member inquiry committee tasked with probing contradictory statements on Rs 5bn outstanding amount

The government has established a two-member committee to investigate contradictory statements regarding outstanding dues from Cnergyico PK Ltd (CPL).

Petroleum Secretary Momin Agha appointed Joint Secretary Khalil Ahmed and Director Syed Ahsen from the Policy Wing to lead the inquiry into the misstatements by the Directorate General of Oil officials.

An official memorandum revealed that during a meeting to prepare a presentation for the prime minister, it was stated that no outstanding dues existed against CPL. However, during the subsequent presentation to the PMO, DG Oil officials claimed that Rs 5 billion was outstanding.

The discrepancy led to an inquiry aimed at identifying responsible officials and taking appropriate action.

Noteworthily, the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC) approved the recovery of Rs 47.5 billion in petroleum levies from CPL in its August 26 meeting. With a late payment surcharge, the total amount owed by CPL reached approximately Rs 60 billion.

The Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) also mediated a settlement framework, which was approved by the ECC, to resolve CPL’s dues. The Petroleum Division has been authorized to sign the settlement deed, with the ECC directing that the entire amount be recovered in accordance with the settlement terms.
