Engro appoints Ahsan Zafar Syed as president, CEO designate

Current President, CEO Ghias Khan will continue to fulfill his responsibilities until his term ends in April 2024

Engro Corporation, Pakistan’s premier business conglomerate, has announced the appointment of Ahsan Zafar Syed as President and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Designate, the company informed the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) in a notice on Wednesday. 

Meanwhile, Ghias Khan will continue to serve as President and CEO of Engro Corporation until the end of his term in April 2024. 

“The board has also expressed its deepest gratitude towards the existing President & CEO, Mr. Ghias Khan, whose leadership and dedication has helped in the substantial growth of the Company,” read the notice. 

Ahsan, currently CEO of Engro Fertilizers, began his career with Engro (then Exxon Chemical Pakistan Limited) over 30 years ago. He played a pivotal engineering role in the construction of the EnVen plant for Engro Fertilizers, which is the second-largest single-train urea plant in the world.

Serving as the CEO of Engro Energy, he oversaw power and mining projects collectively amounting to USD 1.9 billion, leading the successful exploration of Pakistan’s largest coal reserves in Thar.

Engro Corporation, under Ghias Khan’s leadership over the past seven years, achieved significant milestones. 

Engro Fertilizers, its flagship business, became the most valuable fertilizer company on the PSX.

Major projects, including the Thar project and the partnership with VOPAK for the LNG Terminal, were successfully completed.

Engro also diversified its portfolio by venturing into a telecommunication infrastructure vertical through Engro Enfrashare and established Engro FZE in Dubai for regional trade. 

Ghias Khan implemented the current operating model for Engro Corporation, earning several awards and recognition. 

Recently, four Group companies secured top positions in the PSX awards for 2023, with Engro being acknowledged as a leading employer of choice.
