Federal Minister for Commerce Jam Kamal Khan has stressed the need for restructuring the Trade Development Authority of Pakistan (TDAP) to improve its efficiency.Â
Chairing the 11th Board Meeting of TDAP, the minister highlighted security concerns at TEXPO events and proposed the creation of a permanent Director General (DG) Security position within TDAP to manage protocols for high-profile gatherings.
The minister pointed out gaps in current security arrangements, noting the attendance of ministers, ambassadors, and foreign dignitaries at events. “We need a proper security professional in the structure,” he said.Â
The meeting, attended by TDAP Chairman Zubair Motiwala and newly inducted board members, reviewed a 14-point agenda focused on enhancing TDAP’s operations.
New board members, including senators, were briefed on the authority’s structure, mandate, and functions. The board recommended initiating the creation of the DG Security role through the Ministry of Commerce and Finance Division.
Criticizing the reliance on external security advisors, the minister called for a dedicated in-house security professional to oversee arrangements at airports, hotels, and city-level trade events.Â
He also addressed issues with TEXPO’s logistical and promotional challenges, directing the board to establish clear Terms of Reference (TORs) for event management to ensure quality execution.
Citing inadequate cooling systems and substandard arrangements for VIP attendees, the minister remarked, “Badar [event management firm] is promoting itself more than the country and exhibitions.” He also proposed establishing a permanent TDAP office at the Expo Center to streamline event operations and enhance TDAP’s presence.
Focusing on mineral development, the minister suggested dedicated exhibitions for the sector and reclassifying minerals under the “industry” category to attract investment. He also emphasized the need for cost evaluations and strategic planning for international exhibitions to ensure optimal use of TDAP’s resources.
The meeting discussed upgrading TDAP’s offices in Lahore and Quetta and constructing a new office in Islamabad to address structural deficiencies. The minister directed immediate action to improve working environments and enhance office layouts, including repositioning the boardroom entrance for better accessibility.
The board agreed to expand the number of subcommittees to strengthen governance and ensure timely implementation of recommendations from previous meetings.
The federal minister’s directives reflect the government’s focus on structural reforms, enhanced security measures, and efficient event management to position TDAP as a dynamic institution for promoting Pakistan’s trade and commerce globally.
