ISLAMABAD – The government is stepping up efforts to revive Pakistan’s cotton industry, with authorities emphasising the need for coordinated, evidence-based, and actionable measures to improve global competitiveness and enhance farmers’ incomes.
During the fourth meeting of the Cabinet Committee on Essential Cash Crops held in Islamabad on Thursday, Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar instructed the Ministry of National Food Security to formulate a comprehensive action plan. The goal is to ensure that the policy recommendations discussed in previous meetings are effectively translated into practical steps.
The committee conducted an in-depth review of the cotton sector, focusing on strategies to improve both production and profitability. Key areas of discussion included enhancing seed quality, promoting the adoption of advanced technology and research, addressing climate-related risks, and engaging stakeholders across the public and private cotton value chain.
The meeting was attended by the Minister for National Food Security, SAPM Tariq Bajwa, senior officials from the Ministry of Commerce, FBR, MNFSR, as well as representatives from provincial governments and other relevant organisations. The committee stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to restore the cotton industry to its former strength, ensuring its role as a critical contributor to Pakistan’s agricultural sector and economic growth.
