Pakistan’s formal request to join BRICS will not be discussed at the meeting being held today [Monday] in Brazil, The News reported, citing diplomatic sources.
China confirmed that President Xi Jinping will join the BRICS leaders’ meeting via video link at the invitation of Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and will deliver an address.
The meeting’s agenda will cover global multipolarity, the upcoming UN climate conference COP30, and ongoing conflicts in Gaza and Ukraine. Experts noted that BRICS leaders may also discuss a coordinated response to US tariff policies.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi will also be absent from the summit, having canceled his US visit to the UN General Assembly under pressure from US President Donald Trump. Indian External Affairs Minister J. Shankar is expected to participate virtually.
The Brazilian administration said the final list of participants has not been confirmed, but the summit remains open to all member countries.
