NA committee rejects report on NBP promotion process

ISLAMABAD: Showing dissatisfaction over the report of State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) regarding misappropriation in the promotion process for National Bank of Pakistan’s (NBP) employees, members of National Assembly Standing Committee on Finance asked SBP to reevaluate selection criteria for the appointment of NBP and president promotion of other employees.

SBP was asked by the committee to present a report on the recommendations of the committee.

SBP Governor Tariq Bajwa while briefing the committee about the bank’s assessed report on performance, length of services and apportionment of 50 marks in the interview, suggested the committee to forward the same to NBP Board for further action.

However, members of the committee Asad Umar, Mian Abdul Manan and Nafisa Shah rejected the findings saying that no appropriate report was submitted by SBP.  Asad Umar said that the SBP was unable to clear simple selection criterion followed in the appointment of NBP president.

Another MNA from Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM) Rashid Godel suggested the committee to leave the issue as there were many other issues on agenda. Interestingly, NBP President Saeed Ahmed was also present in the meeting, but he remained silent.

Officials from SBP, however, claimed that the Ministry of Finance is the appointing authority for NBP president.  They said that they would reply if the case was put on agenda at the next meeting of the committee.

Committee also criticised the SBP for not responding to the query about the details related to the appointment of National Bank President Saeed Ahmed. Tariq Bajwa promised to provide the details at the next meeting.
