Govt should take steps to boost export of halal meat

The total global market for kosher (halal) meat and beef is worth $2.97 billion. The share of Pakistan is only $33 million or 8 percent. Expert Agha Saiddain is of the view that a large number of Muslim population in Muslim countries avoid Halal meat and beef imported from Non-Muslim countries and this represents an opportunity window for Pakistan to take advantage of.

Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, United Arab Emirates, Oman, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar and Afghanistan rely heavily on imported kosher meat and Pakistan stands a chance to increase its exports if it exports meat rather than exporting livestock.

He stressed that despite the government approving a quota for export of livestock from ports and borders, export volumes remain high through misquoting of figures and undercover smuggling of live animals from borders of Quetta and Peshawar.

Saiddain further added that export and smuggling of live animals should be stopped on urgent basis. He further added that export of kosher meat may be encouraged by giving interest-free loans for setting up modern slaughterhouses in the country.

An official of the Ministry of Food Security and Research said that there is great potential for Pakistan’s export of meat provided government takes steps to improve hygiene and sanitary conditions. It is alarming to note that only adult and healthy animals considered fit for reproduction are being exported hence Pakistan is exporting seed of future breed of livestock. Unfortunately, this can create an acute shortage of livestock in the country in the future.

Meanwhile, the United States represents a  potential market for Pakistan to import high quality food products meeting its local requirements through enhanced bilateral trade ties and coordination among businessmen.

A senior member of Pakistan Food Association said efforts from Pakistan trade missions in the US, EU and others countries should be aimed at disseminating knowledge and seek opportunities in bilateral trade in food sector between countries and to optimise the facilitation in imports. Proper warehouses are needed in Pakistan to keep food items at the required temperature.
