Federal government allocates Rs25b for Karachi projects in upcoming year’s budget

For Karachi, the federal government has earmarked Rs 25b in the upcoming year’s budget 2017-18 for the projects and schemes there. These projects include Greater Karachi Water Supply Scheme (K-IV) and the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit System.

For the K-IV project, the centre has allocated Rs 9.6b for the next financial year, and the total federal share in it was Rs 12.8b out of a total of Rs 25.5b. The government has already spent Rs 3.8 on it. For another scheme, Greater Karachi Sewerage Plant S-III, Rs 1.5b have been allotted out of a total of Rs 2.4b. This project has been ongoing for the last 10 years, its total cost is 8b out of which the federal share accounts for Rs4b.

Lyari Expressway project has seen an allocation of Rs500m suggested for the next financial year by the federal government out of a total of Rs1.72b. Already Rs 9.8b has been spent on this project out of its total cost of Rs11.5b.

The Green Line BRT project has been assigned a share of Rs13b for the next financial year. Already Rs13b have been spent on this project. The federal government in April approved a modified green line bus rapid transit (BRT) project at a cost of Rs24.6b for the city of Karachi, and the cost of the project escalated by 52pc because of this revision.
