Contract for country’s first supercritical coal-fired power project in Jamshoro signed

JAMSHORO: The management contract of Jamshoro Coal-Fired Power Project was signed between the Jamshoro Power Company Limited (GENCO) and Siemens Harbin Electric International on Friday in Islamabad.

It will be the first supercritical coal-fired power project in public sector to be installed at Jamshoro in Sindh.

The engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) contract for the first unit that has a capacity of 660MW was signed at a ceremony in Islamabad. A five-year operation and maintenance (O&M) contract was also signed.

“The EPC contract price for Lot-I (unit 1 of 660MW and balance of plant) signed today is $562 million. The EPC contract price of Lot-II (unit 2 of 660MW and expansion of balance of plant) is $313 million which will be signed in the next phase once the financing arrangement is finalised,” read a statement released on the occasion.

“The signed Lot is being funded by the Asian Development Bank, and each unit will be completed within 42 months”, the release added.

GENCO Holding Company Chief Executive Officer Muhammad Imran Mian on the occasion stated, “This project will use 80% imported sub-bituminous coal and 20% local Thar lignite and, as a result, cheaper energy will be generated to meet the future electricity needs of the country”,  adding that arrangements for financing the second unit are at an advanced stage with its EPC contract expected to be signed soon.

  1. GENCO should start preparing environmental Impact Assessment Report. They can take help of IoBM students who are working on similiar projects. Further they should blend thar coal in different proprtionss with subbituminous coal in Lab and set up a pilot lab to design the best blend. Best of Luck
