ISLAMABAD: The tenures of Pakistan’s present representatives at the Asian Development Bank (ADB) and World Bank (WB) were reduced by the Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi on Thursday.

The four-year tenure of the country’s executive directors at the WB and ADB have been synchronized with the election cycles of these entities, as per instructions issued by the PM’s office, reported Express Tribune.

The WB elect its board in November for every four years and ADB in July.

This decision comes in wake of the country’s previous representative refusal to leave the post notwithstanding the expiry of his tenure.

The decision of the outgoing government would immediately affect the country’s present representatives at these entities.

And PM Abbasi directed the Establishment Division that term of Shahid Mahmood must end by June 30th, 2021, 10 months before the scheduled end of his original term of four years.

In April, Mahmood had taken the place of Sami Saeed who had refused to leave the post despite the expiry of his term in January this year.

He contended ADB board had re-elected him as the executive director for two years starting July 2017 and his revised term would terminate in July 2019.

President Mamnoon Hussain then took away the powers given to Saeed for representing the country on the ADB board, which caused him to give up the charge.

And the PM office observed the actions of Saeed had caused grave global embarrassment for the country.

For the time ahead, Pakistan will send its nominee for a period of four years and if a position gets empty before the conclusion of tenure due to some reason, the new appointee would serve for the remaining portion of the term.

But in case of the remaining period being less than six months, the new delegate would be appointed for a period of four years.

With these revisions, Pakistan’s delegate at the WB and ADB would serve for two years as alternative executive director and another two years as executive director.
