Business community opposes lockdown, suggests safety measures

LCCI urges govt to allow businesses to operate 24 hours to reduce rush in markets

LAHORE: The Lahore Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI) on Monday urged the government to implement safety measures instead of shutting down businesses before Eid-ul-Azha.

The demand was made by the LCCI President Irfan Iqbal Sheikh, Senior Vice President Ali Hussam Asghar and Vice President Mian Zahid Jawaid Ahmad as they addressed a delegation of traders from different markets of the city.

The delegation informed the LCCI office-bearers that closure of businesses before Eid-ul-Azha would lead to more losses for the traders who have already suffered financially due to earlier lockdowns imposed by the government to control the spread of Covid-19.

The delegation of traders said that due to the untiring efforts of the government, sacrifices of paramedical staff and unprecedented cooperation of the business community the spread of coronavirus in the country has been brought under control which leaves no reason to close down businesses and markets before Eid.

They urged the government to allow 24 hours operation for businesses till Eid-ul-Azha which would provide more time to people visit shops and reduce rush in the markets.

The LCCI office-bearers conceded that the business community has been the backbone of the country’s economy and has been playing its role in providing employment to people and revenue to the government.

They urged the business community to ensure implementation of safety measures and standard operating procedures (SOPs), earlier announced by the government to control the spread of coronavirus. They also appealed to the general public to follow the SOPs.
