Top govt offices owe over Rs200 million in unpaid gas bills

Parliament House owes Rs24 million, Foreign Office Rs53 million and Aiwan-e-Sadr over Rs19 million

The Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited (SNGPL) has listed 20 public sector institutions, including Aiwan-e-Sadr, Parliament Lodges, and key ministries, as defaulters with unpaid gas bills exceeding Rs200 million, according to a news report.

The Parliament Lodges/MNA Hostel alone owes Rs24.95 million across several meters. One meter for the Lodges (number 02210217) has dues of Rs21.86 million, while another has been disconnected, carrying Rs2.65 million in unpaid bills.

Similarly, the Cabinet Division building has accumulated dues of Rs23.07 million under meter number RC01551798.

Aiwan-e-Sadr, the official residence of the president, owes Rs11.47 million for the main building, Rs2.85 million for the police barracks, and Rs2.35 million for another facility. Additional dues are attributed to other Aiwan-e-Sadr facilities, such as washpoints and dispensaries.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, listed under meter number RC00843909, tops the defaulters with unpaid bills amounting to Rs53.3 million.

Other defaulters include the Ministry of Finance, with dues of Rs3.74 million, and multiple blocks of the Pak Secretariat, including the K Block, which owes Rs23.57 million.

Parliament House has outstanding dues of Rs24.15 million, while other government entities, such as the US Agency and Masjid Pak Secretariat, owe smaller amounts of Rs219,300 and Rs40,271, respectively.

The official letter notes a steep 272% hike in gas tariffs, rising from Rs780 per MMBTU in January 2023 to Rs2,900 per MMBTU in February 2024. Despite these increases, budget allocations for these offices reportedly remain limited, rising by only 10% annually.

SNGPL has approached the government and the Accountant General Pakistan Revenues (AGPR) to expedite the recovery of these dues. Sources suggest that if payments are not made promptly, SNGPL may resort to filing recovery suits against the defaulting institutions.
