Electricity tops sales tax collection, contributing Rs 283.177 billion in 1HFY25

Sales tax collection from petroleum products is Rs 82.521 billion, sugar is Rs 58.957 billion, cement is Rs 48.275 billion, and cotton yarn is Rs 43.389 billion

Sales tax (domestic) collection from electricity reached Rs 283.177 billion during July-December 2024-25, up 53.5% from Rs 184.468 billion in the same period of 2023-24, according to data from the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR).

This made electricity the top contributor to domestic sales tax during the first half of FY 2024-25.

Sales tax collection from petroleum products amounted to Rs 82.521 billion, reflecting an 8.7% increase from Rs 75.911 billion in the corresponding period last year. The sugar sector ranked third in sales tax collection, with Rs 58.957 billion collected in July-December 2024-25, up 26.4% from Rs 46.642 billion in the previous year.

Sales tax collection from cement stood at Rs 48.275 billion, showing a 47.7% rise from Rs 32.686 billion in the same period of 2023-24. The textile sector also contributed significantly, with Rs 43.389 billion collected from cotton yarn, an increase of 37.2% from Rs 31.628 billion in the previous year.

However, sales tax collection from natural gas decreased by 14.9%, with Rs 21.086 billion collected during the period, compared to Rs 24.774 billion in 2023-24. Similarly, sales tax collection from cigarettes saw a decline of 26.1%, amounting to Rs 19.668 billion, down from Rs 26.605 billion.

Sales tax from aerated water increased by 8.6%, reaching Rs 13.153 billion, up from Rs 12.113 billion in the previous year.
