Trump tax and spending bill clears US Senate, awaits House approval

The bill offers large tax breaks to high-income earners and limits food and healthcare benefits

U.S. Senate Republicans passed President Donald Trump’s tax and spending bill on Tuesday in a 51-50 vote, sending it to the House for final approval.

Vice President JD Vance broke the tie after three Republicans joined all 47 Democrats in opposing the bill.

The legislation would extend Trump’s 2017 tax cuts, offer new breaks for tips and overtime pay, and increase funding for the military and immigration enforcement. It would also cut $930 billion from Medicaid and food aid, repeal many green energy programs, and raise the debt ceiling by $5 trillion.

Trump wants to sign the bill by July 4. House Speaker Mike Johnson said he plans to meet that deadline. But some House Republicans are opposed to Senate provisions, and the vote is expected to be close.

The Congressional Budget Office estimates the Senate version would add $800 billion more to the national debt than the House version. The bill’s overall cost could raise the debt by $3.3 trillion.

Republicans are divided over the impact on health and safety net programs.

Much of the overnight Senate debate focused on winning over Senator Lisa Murkowski, who later supported the bill after changes to help Alaska. These included more food aid and $50 billion for rural hospitals.

The bill offers large tax breaks to high-income earners and limits food and healthcare benefits. The CBO estimates nearly 12 million more people could lose health coverage under the plan.

Critics say it shifts costs to low-income Americans.

House Democrats oppose the measure. Some Republicans from high-tax states are also demanding changes. The House Freedom Caucus objects to the Senate bill’s high cost.

Trump and GOP leaders are trying to rally support, but deep divisions remain over spending, taxes, and the national debt.
