Pakistan and Canada strengthen mining and trade ties, eye future collaboration

Pakistan and Canada aim to expand cooperation in mining, energy, and trade; Reko Diq project serves as a cornerstone for future joint ventures and economic growth

Pakistan and Canada have committed to deepening their bilateral trade and investment partnership, particularly in the mining and energy sectors, with a focus on the Reko Diq project.

Federal Minister for Petroleum, Ali Pervaiz Malik, met with the newly appointed Canadian High Commissioner to Pakistan, H.E. Mr. Tarik Ali Khan, at the Ministry of Petroleum today to discuss opportunities for expanding cooperation.

The meeting highlighted Canada’s keen interest in diversifying trade ties with Asia, focusing on sectors like critical minerals, energy, renewables, and agriculture.

High Commissioner Khan specifically pointed to the role of Barrick Gold Corporation, the Canadian company overseeing the Reko Diq project in Balochistan, which has the potential to be a key driver of economic growth for both Pakistan and the region. “We look forward to Reko Diq’s success, benefiting Pakistan and the people of Balochistan,” Khan stated.

Minister Malik underscored the importance of Reko Diq as a transformative project for Pakistan’s mining sector, stating that it would set new standards for the industry. He also pointed out that multiple other mining projects are being planned in the surrounding areas, offering significant investment opportunities.

To further bolster ties, Minister Malik invited a Canadian delegation to the Pakistan Minerals Forum scheduled for 2026. He emphasized the potential for joint ventures, especially in exploration, and reaffirmed Pakistan’s commitment to creating a favorable environment for foreign investment.

The two sides agreed on the need to strengthen the Pakistan-Canada partnership, with particular focus on trade, investment, and energy cooperation moving forward.
