ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan on Thursday appointed Minister of Economic Affairs Omar Ayub the new chairman of the Economic Coordination Committee (ECC).
According to a notification in this regard, the premier has reconstituted the ECC of the Cabinet with immediate effect.
All the other members of the ECC remained unchanged. These include the ministers for communications, law and justice, maritime affairs, national food security & research, energy, planning & development, privatisation, railways, industries and production, interior and water resources.
The document states that twenty officials, including the advisor to prime minister on finance and revenue, as well as others will attend the meeting on a special invitation by the chairman as per the rules.
It is pertinent to mention here that Adviser to the Prime Minister on Finance and Revenue Shaukat Tarin, now a senator from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP), cannot chair the meeting of ECC or any other decision making forum.
The government had appointed Tarin as a federal finance minister; however, his term as minister ended on October 15.
Under Article 91(9) of the Constitution, a minister who for any period of six consecutive months is not a member of the national assembly or the Senate is to cease to hold the office of a minister and cannot be appointed a minister again unless elected as member of the parliament.
