South Punjab is witnessing a surge in online fraud cases, with an increasing number of complaints being filed with the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA).Â
According to media reports, fraudsters are preying on vulnerable populations, particularly in rural areas, through deceptive schemes involving the misuse of thumb impressions for illegal activities, officials reported.
An FIA official revealed that scammers often target poor villagers, especially women, by offering seemingly lucrative opportunities. Under false pretenses, they collect thumb impressions, which are later used to open accounts with microfinance institutions without the victims’ knowledge. These accounts are then exploited for illegal purposes, leaving unsuspecting individuals embroiled in legal trouble.
“Many victims don’t realise how their thumb impressions have been misused until they face legal complications,” the official stated.
A recent victim, Salman Amjid from Multan, shared his ordeal. Posing as distant relatives, fraudsters contacted him on social media and deceived him with fabricated stories, ultimately defrauding him of a substantial amount of money.
Despite intensifying efforts to combat online scams, the FIA is struggling with limited resources. “Each investigation officer is handling over 350 active cases, making it difficult to address complaints promptly,” the official noted.
In response, the FIA has called for stricter verification processes for microfinance institutions to prevent such crimes. Officials emphasized the need to tighten account-opening procedures and raise public awareness to protect vulnerable populations.
The agency has urged citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities immediately. Public awareness campaigns and improved financial regulations are also being advocated to tackle the growing threat.
“The fight against online fraud requires updated regulations, enhanced resources, and a collective effort to safeguard communities in South Punjab,” the FIA stated, highlighting the need for a coordinated approach to ensure justice for victims and a secure digital environment.
