Delegation of AIIB calls on Sartaj Aziz, assures Pakistan future support

ISLAMABAD

A delegation of Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) led by its Vice President Pandian called on Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Sartaj Aziz here at Planning Commission on Monday. The AIIB delegation included Supee Teravaninthorn, Dong Ik Lee, and Shakil Khan.

The delegation highlighted the active participation of Pakistan in the process of establishment of the Bank and assured support in the future. It further highlighted that AIIB primarily aims to bridge infrastructure gaps in Asia by providing diverse financial options which is vital for the development of the region and socio-economic uplift of the people.

Sartaj Aziz appreciated the relationship of AIIB with Pakistan adding that the Bank enjoys across the board political, institutional and popular support that sets it apart from the relationship with other multilateral financial and development institutions.

He acknowledged that the establishment of AIIB will fill in the financial vacuum in Asia by providing a new window of financing and would support up-gradation of infrastructure in areas of transport, energy, and development of urban centres for sustainable development. Explaining the economic and development history of Pakistan, he underscored the importance of China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) for the two countries and region. Furthermore, he invited AIIB to assist Pakistan in preparing a master plan for renewable energy and support some of their projects.

On the occasion, the delegation was briefed about CPEC projects and on Vision 2025 for the Pakistan’s economy.
