Brazilian President calls U.S. tariff blackmail, says no foreigner gives orders

Lula says Brazil will move ahead with plans to regulate and tax U.S. tech companies

Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said on Thursday that no foreigner would give him orders, rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff decision and calling it “unacceptable blackmail.”

Lula made the remarks at two separate events after the United States announced a 50% tariff on Brazilian goods last week.

Trump said the tariff, which will begin in August, was a response to Brazil’s trade practices and its treatment of former President Jair Bolsonaro. Lula previously referred to Trump as an “emperor” the world does not want.

In a speech in Goias, Lula said Brazil would move ahead with plans to regulate and tax U.S. tech companies. He told a group of student activists that digital platforms spread violence and false information under the name of free speech.

Later in a national TV and radio address, Lula said Brazil had submitted a trade proposal to the U.S. in May but received only threats in return. He said the U.S. gave false information about trade and attacked Brazilian institutions.

Brazil’s government has started talks with companies affected by the tariffs and is preparing possible retaliatory actions if negotiations fail.

Foreign Minister Mauro Vieira said Lula remains open to meeting Trump if the opportunity arises. Lula is serving his third non-consecutive term as president. His approval ratings have recently improved following the public dispute with Trump.
