PM Sharif calls for global cooperation to tackle climate change, urges technology sharing with the Global South

Prime minister emphasizes shared prosperity and mutual cooperation between the global North and South in tackling climate challenges, during a high-level discussion at the Future Investment Initiative in Riyadh

RIYADH: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, during his participation in the 9th Future Investment Initiative Conference 2025 in Riyadh, called for increased cooperation between the global North and South to address climate change and environmental degradation.

He emphasized the importance of sharing technology and resources for the collective prosperity of humanity, particularly in countries like Pakistan, which are facing the brunt of climate catastrophes.

Speaking at a high-level roundtable discussion on “Is Humanity Heading in the Right Direction?”, the Prime Minister stressed that climate change impacts require a united response. “If humanity is to move forward, it must proceed together, sharing its resources and grievances and passing on modern technologies to those who can use them to boost production in agriculture, industry, and employment,” he said.

PM Sharif also noted the limitations of relying on loans to recover from such crises, arguing that continuous borrowing only erodes a country’s economic strength. Instead, he urged for a cooperative approach that would allow countries like Pakistan to thrive despite climate adversities.

The Prime Minister also acknowledged the vision of Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince for the transformation of societies, highlighting the progress Pakistan has made through substantial reforms. He pointed to the country’s digitization of its tax collection system and its ongoing industrial reforms, particularly focusing on the country’s youth. “Sixty percent of Pakistan’s population is young. This demographic challenge also presents an opportunity,” Sharif noted.

Pakistan’s agricultural economy, despite contributing minimally to global greenhouse gas emissions, has suffered immense losses from climate change. The Prime Minister shared the severe impact of the 2022 floods, which caused over $130 billion in economic damages, and the continuing vulnerability to climate-induced disasters, including recent floods in 2025.

He emphasized the need for global solidarity in the face of such challenges. “This is not acceptable,” Sharif said, referencing the ongoing struggles faced by Pakistan due to climate change. He reiterated the need for the global community to come together and help nations like Pakistan recover from environmental catastrophes.

The Prime Minister also touched upon Pakistan’s efforts to adopt AI and technology, noting the country’s focus on preparing its youth for the digital age through skill development and investment in AI, IT, and technology infrastructure. While acknowledging the potential of AI, Sharif urged dialogue with the global North on its responsible and productive use, emphasizing collaboration between the North and South.

In his closing remarks, PM Sharif shared a personal anecdote, recounting the struggles his father faced in reviving a nationalized steel plant in 1972. He used the story as a testament to the power of resilience, determination, and hard work in overcoming adversity and achieving success.
