KARACHI: The National Financial Literacy Program for Youth (NFLP-Y), which is run jointly by the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) and the National Institute of Banking and Finance (NIBAF), has launched its online e-portal and game on Wednesday.
According to a statement released on Wednesday by the SBP, this is Pakistan’s first online financial literacy course, delivered through an interactive game in both English and Urdu.
The game targets three age-groups – Children (9-12), Adolescents’ (13-17), and Youth (18-29), and can be accessed through a desktop browser, or on mobile phones on the Google Play store and the Apple App store.
The game is called ‘POMPAK – Learn to Earn’. POMPAK is short for Pakistan pomegranates. Users follow two entrepreneurial cousins, Shireen, a city girl, and Ali, who lives on a farm. The two grow a pomegranate tree on Ali’s farm, expand it to an orchard, and eventually set up a juice shop in the city that helps pay for their respective university fees. The idea of the game is to help the families create a successful business. As the game progresses, users earn points, or pomegranate seeds.
The game’s objective, according to the SBP, is to strengthen Pakistan children and youth’s money management skills, and improve their understanding of finance. Users learn about saving, budgeting, borrowing, and banking, among many other topics. Each topic is followed with interactive questions, and users who complete the course are awarded with a Certificate of Financial Literacy.
“When closure of educational institutes in Pakistan is affecting studies of thousands of students, NFLP-Y is hoping to positively impact the youth of Pakistan with its eLearning portal,” the statement said.
