Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, announced on Thursday that it is laying off an undisclosed number of employees from its Reality Labs division as part of ongoing restructuring efforts.
The job cuts primarily affect teams within Oculus Studios, Meta’s in-house game development arm for its Quest virtual reality headsets. Employees working on projects like the VR fitness game Supernatural are among those impacted.
A Meta spokesperson stated that the changes are intended to help the Studios team work more efficiently on future mixed-reality experiences for its growing audience.
As of December 31, 2024, Meta’s global workforce stood at 74,067 employees. Reality Labs, which oversees the development and marketing of the Quest headset line, posted a loss of $5 billion in the fourth quarter. Despite these financial setbacks, CEO Mark Zuckerberg remains optimistic about the company’s long-term commitment to augmented and virtual reality technologies.
