Nvidia CEO says UK lacks AI infrastructure despite strong research base

Huang praises UK’s AI ecosystem, pointing to its top universities and growing startups but notes it lacks its own advanced AI infrastructure

Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, stated on Monday that the United Kingdom lacks sufficient computing infrastructure to fully support its robust artificial intelligence research base.

He made the comments during London Tech Week, where he appeared alongside Prime Minister Keir Starmer.

Huang praised the UK’s AI ecosystem, pointing to its top universities, growing startups, and the third-largest AI venture capital market. But he noted that the country lacks its own advanced AI infrastructure.

He welcomed Starmer’s plan to boost the UK’s domestic computing capacity by 20 times, backed by £1 billion ($1.36 billion) in investment.

“The ability to build these AI supercomputers here in the UK will naturally attract more startups. It will naturally enable all of the rich ecosystem of researchers here,” Huang said. “Britain is an incredible place to invest.”

His remarks came as the Financial Conduct Authority announced a new programme, in partnership with Nvidia, to help financial firms test AI tools in a controlled environment.

The FCA said the programme will give firms access to advanced computing power, better datasets, and expert guidance as they explore early uses of AI. It will be open to all financial services companies working on AI.

Finance Minister Rachel Reeves has urged regulators to remove barriers to economic growth. She has said the work of the FCA and the Prudential Regulation Authority shows progress on cutting unnecessary rules.
