Singapore based company proposes climate-resilient hybrid corn seeds for Pakistan

Singapore-based Corteva Agriscience plans to introduce high-yield, drought-tolerant hybrid corn seeds in Pakistan to enhance agricultural productivity amid climate challenges

Islamabad — Corteva Agriscience, a Singapore-based agricultural science company, has expressed interest in introducing climate-resilient hybrid corn seeds in Pakistan. The company aims to increase corn yields by up to 32% by providing seeds that are more resistant to drought and variable weather conditions.

During a meeting with Minister for National Food Security and Research, Rana Tanveer Hussain, Bryce Sturgess, Commercial Director for Southeast Asian Markets at Corteva, highlighted the potential of these hybrid seeds to address challenges such as water scarcity and changing weather patterns. He emphasised that the adoption of advanced hybrid corn seeds could not only boost yields but also contribute to the country’s long-term agricultural sustainability.

Minister Hussain acknowledged the need for modernization in Pakistan’s agriculture sector and noted that hybrid seed technology, coupled with improved agronomic practices, could significantly increase farmers’ income, reduce crop losses, and enhance national food self-sufficiency.

Pakistan’s agriculture sector faces several challenges that impact corn production. Water scarcity is a significant issue, with the country rapidly moving from being classified as water “stressed” to water “scarce,” with annual water availability falling below 1,000 cubic meters per person. This situation is exacerbated by climate change, leading to increased temperatures, droughts, and irregular rainfall patterns that affect crop yields.

Additionally, outdated farming practices and limited access to modern agricultural technologies hinder productivity. The introduction of climate-resilient hybrid corn seeds by companies like Corteva could play a crucial role in overcoming these challenges and improving food security in Pakistan.

Corteva Agriscience’s commitment to working alongside the Pakistani government aims to strengthen food security through innovative and sustainable agricultural practices.
