Bugti, IFAD discuss climate-resilient farming in Balochistan

Chief minister vows faster irrigation upgrades, market access, and rural empowerment

Balochistan Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti has vowed to accelerate agricultural development projects in the province, with a focus on climate resilience, modern farming, and improved market opportunities.

The pledge came during a meeting with Fernanda Thomaz, Country Director of the UN’s International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), held in Quetta on Wednesday. The two sides reviewed food security, sustainable agriculture, and measures to strengthen Balochistan’s rural economy.

Bugti underlined that the province’s farming sector remains highly vulnerable to climate change and called for the rapid adoption of adaptive practices. “By embracing modern technologies, resilient crops, and sustainable irrigation systems, we can boost productivity and safeguard Balochistan’s food future,” he said.

He further emphasized equipping women and youth with agricultural skills to drive inclusive growth, while noting that work on existing projects to upgrade irrigation networks and rural infrastructure would be expedited. Improving market access for farmers to sell their produce competitively was also highlighted as a government priority.

The chief minister commended IFAD’s contribution to poverty reduction and rural development, assuring that the provincial government would deepen cooperation with international partners.

At the conclusion of the meeting, Bugti presented a commemorative shield to Thomaz, acknowledging IFAD’s support and reaffirming Balochistan’s commitment to sustainable rural progress.
