New convention centre to host SCO Summit 2027 and major national, international events

The Capital Development Authority Development Working Party (CDA-DWP) has approved the New Islamabad Convention, Expo and Exhibition Centre (NICEEC) with a budget of Rs19.371 billion.

The decision was taken at the 78th CDA-DWP meeting chaired by CDA Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner Muhammad Ali Randhawa. Senior officials from the Planning Commission, Interior Ministry, Finance Division, CDA Board and project consultants attended the session.

According to the CDA spokesperson, the Centre will be a multifunctional facility designed to host national and international conventions, trade exhibitions, cultural events and large-scale gatherings. The centre has also been selected as the venue for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in 2027, making timely completion a key priority.

The project has been assigned an 18-month completion timeline, with instructions to maintain international standards in design and execution.

Chairman Randhawa said the new convention centre would address a long-standing infrastructure gap in Islamabad by providing a world-class venue for global conferences and major events. He directed relevant departments to meet deadlines and ensure quality benchmarks.

In addition to NICEEC, the CDA-DWP approved six new pedestrian bridges costing Rs574.682 million. The bridges aim to reduce road accidents, ease traffic congestion and offer safer crossings for schoolchildren, elderly people and persons with disabilities.
