PM’s luxury car auction commences, first sold for Rs1.1mn

A total of 102 vehicles including bulletproof cars are to be auctioned under Prime Minister Imran Khan’s austerity policy

ISLAMABAD: Keeping on his campaign promises, the federal government under the leadership of Prime Minister Imran Khan has commenced the auction of 102 luxury vehicles, including bulletproof cars, today (Monday).

The fleet includes 27 bullet-resistant vehicles and several non-protected ones – both latest and vintage models – one of which was sold for 1.1 million rupees soon after the auction started, according to reports.

As part of PM Khan’s austerity drive, the cars that will be auctioned include four recent models of Mercedes Benz, eight bulletproof BMWs, three 5000cc SUVs and two 3000cc SUVs of 2016 model.

Moreover, 24 Mercedes Benz 2016 model will also be auctioned. Two of the 28 cars are 4,000cc bullet-proof vehicles.

Further, 40 Toyota cars which include a 2004 Lexus, a 2006 Lexus SUV, and two 2004 model Land Cruisers will also be auctioned.

Other vehicles to be auctioned include eight Suzuki cars, five Mitsubishi vehicles, nine Hondas and two jeeps.

The cars will be sold to the highest bidder and are expected to attract much-needed cash flow for the debt-burdened country.

While talking to Profit, a source informed that the cars are expected to auction at a higher price than their market value. He added that the luxury cars have been used by the top brass of the country including several prime ministers and that holds value, which is likely to attract collectors.

Earlier, major news outlets reported that the cars will not be auctioned and will be used by the cabinet division, especially for the commute of foreign guests. However, this has not been confirmed by any government official.

In his maiden speech to the nation, PM Khan emphasised the importance of cutting down on government expenditure. As part of the cost-cutting initiative, he had announced the auction of surplus PM House vehicles.
