NBP terms unauthorised bank account allegations ‘baseless’

The National Bank of Pakistan (NBP) has categorically refuted the recently referenced allegations of Shaheed Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto Medical University (SZABMU) money managed through unauthorized bank account as baseless.

NBP being the largest bank of Pakistan with more than 1400 branches across Pakistan is a listed company and operates in compliance with laws and regulations at the national grid, which adheres to the highest standards in the banking industry of the country.

Referring to the allegation, an NBP spokesperson reiterated that three official accounts of the SZABMU were opened in February 2015 under the approval of the university’s management. All the accounts were opened in full knowledge of the assistant treasurer, treasurer, and deputy registrar of SZAMBU.

Commenting on the allegation, the spokesperson said, “These official accounts are being operated by authorized officials of SZABMU and the alleged transfer of money from these accounts to the joint account of Dr Amjad and his wife is completely false and fabricated.”

He clarified that the accounts were opened under official titles, but because of a mistake by the officer who opened the account, it was marked as a joint operations account, which led to the hiccup.

He further added that one of the signatories of the official accounts, SZBAMU Registrar Amjad Chaudhary, also maintained a personal account jointly with his wife, and that no un-authorized transfers from official accounts of the SZABMU to his personal account had been made.

As per the bank’s regular practice, statements of the SZABMU accounts were regularly being sent and collected by concerned officials, and no discrepancy regarding incorrect account titles was highlighted earlier.

The NBP spokesperson reiterated that all the allegations regarding the keeping of government money in personal accounts were completely untrue.

“It is also pertinent to mention that it is categorically written in the disclaimer on statement of accounts that in the case of any discrepancy in closing balance or debit/credit transaction, it needs to be notified to the bank within 10 days of receipt from the date of statement issued, which was not notified by SZABMU in the allotted period of time, which simplifies the case, thus proving all allegations baseless,” the spokesperson said.
