Minister highlights Pakistan’s digital growth, urges private sector engagement

Minister of State for Information Technology and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja invited Digital Cooperation Organization (DCO) member states and other nations to participate in Pakistan’s Digital Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) Initiative, scheduled for April 29-30.

Speaking at the 4th General Assembly of the DCO in Jordan, she extended an open invitation to all participants, stating, “I would like to take this opportunity to invite all of you to Pakistan to attend this event. Formal invitations will be shared at a later stage.”

She encouraged member states to involve their private sectors and development partners in this initiative, which is being jointly organized by the Government of Pakistan, the DCO, and the World Economic Forum (WEF).

Emphasizing Pakistan’s commitment to digital transformation, she highlighted that the Digital FDI Initiative, co-led by Pakistan, the DCO, and the WEF, would be piloted in Pakistan and envisioned as an annual event. She stated that this initiative would help countries identify and implement policies to attract investment in the digital economy, fostering knowledge-sharing on successful digital reforms.

Khawaja noted that Pakistan’s tech sector is growing at an annual rate of approximately 27%. She also pointed to the recent passage of the National Digital Pakistan Act, which aims to digitize the economy, governance, and society. The initiative is being led by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, who will chair the National Digital Commission.

Outlining the key objectives of the Digital FDI Initiative, she stated that it aims to connect local businesses with international investors and development partners, enhance human capital through industry-academia collaboration and internationally accredited training programs, and strengthen Pakistan’s position as a digital investment hub by ensuring a stable tax policy and investor-friendly regulations.

She reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to creating a supportive environment for digital investment and innovation, positioning the country as a leading global destination in the digital economy.
