Prime Minister pledges Rs 250 billion for Balochistan development projects

Rs70 billion is allocated to a solarisation project in Balochistan, while Rs150 billion is diverted toward the construction of highway N25

QUETTA: Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif on Saturday pledged substantial federal funding and development initiatives to promote progress in Balochistan, the country’s largest province.

Addressing a grand jirga in Quetta, Sharif announced that Rs70 billion would be allocated to a solarisation project in Balochistan, while Rs150 billion would be diverted toward the construction of highway N25. These funds will come from savings generated by lower international petroleum prices, he said.

The prime minister also revealed that the government would allocate Rs1 trillion under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) this year, with 25% — or Rs250 billion — earmarked specifically for Balochistan projects. He emphasized transparency in spending federal funds to ensure the province’s prosperity.

Shehbaz Sharif highlighted past commitments made as Punjab chief minister, including a 10% quota for Balochistani students in scholarships and laptop schemes, and Rs2 billion allocated for a heart hospital in the province. He noted Punjab’s contribution of Rs160 billion from the National Finance Commission (NFC) award to Balochistan.

The prime minister condemned terrorism in Balochistan, attributing violent acts to foreign-backed groups undermining Pakistan’s progress. He assured the public of government and military resolve to maintain peace and deliver social and economic justice.

Sharif praised the Pakistan Armed Forces for their recent military successes, including repelling Indian attacks in early May. He credited Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir for leading the armed forces to victory, boosting national morale and international confidence.

At the Command and Staff College in Quetta, Sharif addressed military officers, emphasizing the evolving nature of threats facing Pakistan, including hybrid warfare and economic sabotage. He called for preparedness across political, military, and economic institutions.

The prime minister praised Pakistan’s response to the Pulwama incident, highlighting precision strikes against high-value targets and the nation’s operational readiness. He condemned India’s attempts to weaponize events and stressed Pakistan’s firm stance on protecting its water rights.

Sharif also cited economic progress since March 2024, including a 28% rise in tax revenue, the introduction of a faceless assessment system at Karachi Port, a decline in inflation from 38% to single digits, and currency stabilization. He credited anti-corruption efforts and anti-smuggling measures for these gains.

The prime minister underscored Pakistan’s strong strategic partnerships with China, Saudi Arabia, Turkey, Qatar, and Gulf states, noting their support during challenging times. He concluded by calling for national unity and perseverance to transform Pakistan into a global model.

Attending the events were Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir, Balochistan Governor Abdul Khaliq Achakzai, Chief Minister Mir Sarfraz Bugti, and other senior military and civilian officials.
